"Hot Topics in Employment Law: New Rules on Non-Competes, Worker Misclassification, and Social Media at Work"
Join us for our Business Building Luncheon series, where each month we hold interactive presentations designed to help you strengthen your business skills and increase your networking base.
This month presenter Lori Goldstein of the Law Office of Lori A. Goldstein, LLC will discuss Hot Topics in Employment. Employers beware of new and old ways to get in legal trouble. The Illinois appellate court ruled last summer that employers cannot enforce non-competes in Illinois until an employee has worked at least 2 years after signing, unless the employer paid a signing bonus or other legal consideration. Governments desperate for tax revenues are cracking down on worker misclassification, both independent contractors who should be employees, and overtime exempt employees who should be receiving overtime. Even a simple claim for unemployment compensation can turn into a full-blown audit. Finally, companies are dealing with the new reality of social media at work, including social media policies, appropriate workplace activities, employee social media activities away from work, and employee privacy. Discipline and termination of employees based on their social media activities are being litigated at the National Labor Relations Board and the courts, even for non-union employers.
